What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains & its immortal.

Our Youth and their Mentors are Doing Great Things!

It seems that most people see the world with "A glass half empty" philosophy.  We turn on the radio or television and we hear more negative in our world than we do the positive.  It makes us very cynical people. We are not willing to help or volunteer where there is need.  I would like to share some of the positives that I have been privileged to be a part of within our community as a parent and business owner.

"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee" Marian Wright Edelman

“The Creator’s Touch” Coach of the Year Award honors the coach of a team which enjoys a successful season on the gridiron while stressing the importance of academic excellence and sense of duty to return something back to the community. It is awarded to the football coach who best demonstrates responsibility, integrity, and excellence on and off the field. This award is more about character than a winning season!

Coaches are among the most influential adults in the lives of youth athletes. In conjunction with parents and schools, coaches are key to developing character in our children. Children who are coached responsibly in sports achieve better grades, are less likely to engage in dangerous behavior, and live longer, healthier lives due to improved fitness they carry forward from youth sports. Sports provide the ideal ‘virtual classroom’ for teaching life lessons, if coaches prepare themselves to become Responsible Coaches.

We will name a Coach of the Year in each of the eleven clubs with an overall recipient being titled 2008 “AYL Coach of the Year”. Each club’s nominee winner will also be acknowledged. The award process will take place over the course of the entire football season, and fan votes will be crucial to the outcome.

The winner in each club will be chosen using a combination of fan votes and votes received from members of the 2008 Coach of the Year Selection Committee. All nomination forms are due no later than Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Awards will be presented during the 2008 Super Bowl Championships. Nomination forms will be available to each club or you may download information from the main Aurora Youth League website at www.theaurorayouthleague.org.

The Diversity Club at Mrachek Middle School sponsored by Mrs. Kim Martin will hold their 3rd Annual Black History Program on Monday, February 27, 2007.  This program energizes and exposes the students to a sometimes forgotten portion of American History.  Through song, dance, praise and spoken words students learn to understand our common similarities and celebrate their differences.

POW! BLAM! Montview Students BURP! with Comics

Wearing their own super T-shirts, third and fifth-grade students in the Boys Underground Reading Project at Montview Elementary get together in their "secret lair" to read their favorite comics and talk about their favorite superheroes. It's all part of a club that encourages student interest in reading.

The students trade comic books to read and then talk about the stories in their monthly after-school meetings. Focusing primarily on comics from Marvel and DC, they also research the history of different superheroes (and villains!) and quiz each other on comic book trivia.

Ed Portoghese, Montview's P.E. teacher, came up with the idea for the super club along with fifth grader Eric H. and third-grade teacher Colin Rottiger.
